Fucking Stupid JOTD: The Judge

A judge asks a defendant to please stand. "You are charged with murdering a school teacher with a chain saw."

From out in the audience a man shouts, "You lying bastard!"

"Silence in the court!" the judge shouted back. He turns to the defendant again and says, "You are also charged with killing a paperboy with a shovel."

"You goddamned tightwad!" blurted the spectator.

"Quiet!" yelled the judge. "You are also charged with killing a mailman withan electric drill."

"You cheap son of a..." the man starts to shout.

The Judge thunders back, "If you don''t tell me the reason for your outbursts rightnow, I will hold in contempt!"

"I''ve lived next to that lying bastard for ten years now, but do you think he ever had a goddamned tool when I needed to borrow one!"

GAOTW: The Libertines

The Libertines were an English rock band who gained notoriety in the early 2000s, as part of what was described as the garage rock revival movement of that time. The band was centred on the song-writing partnership of Pete Doherty (vocals/rhythm guitar) and Carl Barât (vocals/lead guitar), and was backed by John Hassall (bass) and Gary Powell (drums).

Although initially their mainstream success was limited, their profile grew culminating in a #2 single and #1 album in the UK Charts. However, the band's music was often eclipsed by its internal conflicts, many of which stemmed from Doherty's considerable drug use, ultimately resulting in the breakup of the band. The members of The Libertines have gone on to new bands, with varying degrees of commercial and critical success.

The founding members of The Libertines, Carl Barât and Pete Doherty, met when Carl was studying drama at Brunel University in Uxbridge, and sharing a flat in Richmond with Amy-Jo Doherty, the older sister of Pete. Originally, Carl and Pete got along poorly. This lasted until they realized their collective creative capabilties, and forged a bond over their similar passion for writing melodies. Barât abandoned his drama course two years in; Pete left his English literature course at Queen Mary College after only a year, and they moved into a flat together on Camden Road.

They formed a band with their neighbour Steve Bedlow, commonly referred to as Scarborough Steve, and named themselves The Strand, later renamed to The Libertines after Marquis de Sade's Lust of the Libertines ("The Albion" was also considered, but rejected). They met John Hassall and Johnny Borrell through Bedlow, and Hassall joined the band as bassist. At this stage, they had no consistent drummer. They began playing gigs, with many of them taking place in the flat Doherty and Barât shared.

Within a few weeks, they had booked themselves into the Odessa studios to record 3 songs, assisted by Gwyn Mathias (who had previously worked with The Sex Pistols). However, they were disappointed by their scheduled drummer, so Mathias enlisted the help of Paul Dufour at short-notice who, at 54, was considerably older than the others. Despite the age difference, Dufour was impressed enough by the band to join it, and they started doing more recording sessions and playing gigs at venues further afield. Roger Morton, a journalist from the NME, went to see them play in Islington and thought they had potential, so he and a friend offered to manage The Libertines. Despite a separate offer from an experienced member of the music industry, John Waller, The Libertines accepted Morton's services as manager. However, Morton would eventually give up the job after an unsuccessful six months.

In March 2000, they met Banny Poostchi who was a lawyer for Warner Chappell Music Publishing. Recognizing their potential, she took on an active role in managing them. They recorded "Legs 11", a set of their best 8 tracks (and later a popular bootleg recording among fans). However, by December of that year, they had still not been signed and this caused Dufour, Hassall and Pootschi to part ways with The Libertines. The success of The Strokes, a band with a similar style, made Pootschi reconsider her position. She made a plan (dubbed "Plan A") to get them signed to the record label Rough Trade within 6 months. In this period, they wrote many of the songs which ended up on their first album. Johnny Borrell and Gary Powell were recruited to play bass and drums respectively. On 1 October 2001, they played a showcase for James Endeacott from Rough Trade. His support led to them playing for the Rough Trade bosses, Geoff Travis and Jeanette Lee, on the 11 December that year and they were told they would be signed, with the official deal happening on the 21 December.

They were in need of a bassist (Borrell having left to form Razorlight), so Hassall eventually rejoined the band but was informed he would have to stay in the background; the band would be focused on the partnership of Doherty and Barât. Doherty and Barât rented a flat together in Teesdale Street which they named "The Albion Rooms" (a venue that would become a location for many of their guerilla gigs).

Now with a firm line-up, they began to play more gigs and supported The Strokes and The Vines in quick succession. This succeeded in spreading their name around the music press, with the NME taking a particular interest in them (an interest which continued throughout their career).

Their first single was a double A-side of "What a Waster" and "I Get Along", produced by former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler. It was released on 3 June to a lukewarm media reaction and received very little airplay due to its liberal use of profanities. A somewhat 'beeped' version occurring as (BBC Radio 1 Djs) Mark and Lard's single of the week. They featured on their first cover of the NME in the week it came out. The single reached #37 in the UK Singles Chart.

Their first album was recorded and produced by Mick Jones formerly of The Clash. Entitled Up the Bracket, it was recorded at the RAK studios in St John's Wood, with the mixing taking placed at Whitfield studios. During this time, the band were playing as many gigs as possible (over 100 in 2002 alone) including support acts for the Sex Pistols and Morrissey.

Their second single and title track from the album, "Up the Bracket", was released on 30 September and charted at #29. This was soon followed by the release on the 21 October of the album, which charted at #35. They won Best New Band at the NME Awards for that year and Barât moved out of The Albion Rooms.

During the recording of Up the Bracket and in the subsequent touring, Doherty's drug use had increased greatly (he was using both crack cocaine and heroin) and his relationship with the rest of the band deteriorated. The band had become fractious, and some of this tension was visible in their performances. Doherty expressed himself in "The Books of Albion", his personal collection of notes, thoughts and poems, and also more and more frequently on the libertines.org fan forums. His posts and writings at this time were unpredictable: at times, he seemed distressed and angry; at others, he came across as calm and happy.

Carl Barât's tattoo of the word "Libertine" on his right arm. Taken from the second album coverThey went to the U.S. to promote themselves and work on new material. While in New York they recorded the Babyshambles Sessions. As a mark of their commitment to the band, Doherty and Barât both got tattoos of the word "Libertine" on their arms. The prelude to this seminal moment of Libertines history can be heard on "The Good Old Days" from the Babyshambles sessions, in which, after the lyric "A list of things we said we'd do tomorrow" Pete yells 'Get a tattoo!' However, Barât became increasingly exasperated with the people Doherty was associating with and the drugs that came with them. Barât quit the sessions in disgust and Doherty finished recording alone. The sessions were given to a fan called Helen Hsu who, allegedly as Doherty instructed, put them free onto the internet.

Tensions grew further back in the U.K. as Doherty organised and played guerrilla gigs, which Barât did not attend. Their new single, Don't Look Back Into The Sun saw the return of Bernard Butler as producer. The lyrical quality of the song was praised, and this was held as a prime example of Doherty's songwriting talents. However, Doherty did not work well with Butler and was rarely present, so it had to be pieced together from the vocals he provided with Butler himself recording Doherty's guitar parts.

Doherty then neglected to go on the tour of Europe, after Barât failed to turn up to a gig organised by him. Doherty had felt betrayed and was unwilling to associate himself with Barât at that time. The Libertines were forced to play without Doherty: a guitar technician learnt his guitar parts and several songs were dropped altogether. Soon, however, the positions changed and it was Barât who refused to let Doherty into the band unless he cleaned himself up. Doherty continued to play with Babyshambles as The Libertines (without Doherty) completed tour commitments in Japan. It was during this time that Doherty burgled Barât's flat taking several items and was subsequently arrested. On 11 August, he pleaded guilty at the preliminary hearing to the charge of burglary.

Admidst the internal turmoil, "Don't Look Back Into The Sun" was released on 18 August and charted at #11, the highest position they had managed at that point. The Libertines played the Carling Weekend with replacement guitarist Anthony Rossomando (who would later join Dirty Pretty Things). On 7 September, Judge Roger Davies sentenced Doherty to 6 months in prison. He served his sentence in Wandsworth prison. This sentence was later reduced on appeal by Judge Derek Inman to just two months.

Barât was waiting for Doherty outside the prison when he was released. After an emotional reunion they played a gig the same day at the Tap'n'Tin pub, surprisingly with both Hassall and Powell who had not been expected to come. The show became NME's Gig Of The Year. The Libertines were going to try to put their problems behind them and went on to play three consecutive sold-out dates at the London Forum in mid-December 2003 (these gigs being named amongst the top 100 gigs of all time by Q Magazine) ending in stage invasions from the fans. They also went on a widely-acclaimed UK tour in March 2004, including three more consecutive sold-out dates in London, this time at Brixton Academy.

Banny Pootschi resigned and was replaced as manager by Alan McGee, who was previously the founder and MD of Creation Records (most famous for signing Oasis) and would later would become manager of Dirty Pretty Things. They continued to play gigs and commenced recording of their second album with Bernard Butler. However, the relationship between Doherty and Butler was as unsuccessful as before and the attempts were soon abandoned. In early 2004, The Libertines won Best Band in the NME awards, despite the fact that "Don't Look Back Into The Sun" was their only official release during the preceding year.

Mick Jones returned as producer for the second attempt to record the second album. However, Doherty had returned to his old ways and habits, so relationships were strained. Security hired for the protection of Doherty and Barât often had to be used to keep them from fighting. The lyrics of the song "The Saga" were largely taken from a letter written to Doherty by his friend and literary manager, Paul Roundhill, warning Doherty of his growing drug problem.[citation needed] On the side from The Libertines, Doherty had recorded the vocals for "For Lovers" a song written by his friend (and fellow drug user[citation needed]) Peter "Wolfman" Wolfe. This was released on 13 April and reached #7 in the charts, eclipsing The Libertines' best single to that date. Despite Barât's intolerance of Wolfe and the drugs, he recorded guitar for the B-side to the single. The album had been finished and Doherty left the mixing and dubbing to the others; he would never return to the studios with The Libertines. On 14 May he was admitted to The Priory, a high-profile retreat, in an attempt to beat his addictions. He left there early, returned but then left again a week later on June 7.

During this time, Barât had been setting up a weekly clubnight called Dirty Pretty Things (a later dispute forced it to be renamed Bright Young Things) at the Infinity Club in the West End. The day Doherty left the Priory for the second time, he went to the club and spoke with Barât, with Hassall and Powell present as well. Doherty told him that he was going to Wat Tham Krabok in Thailand to get clean. The Libertines performed a short set that night: it was the last time they would all play together, and the last time Doherty would speak to Barât for more than 9 months.

Doherty's rehab was, once again, unsuccessful. He abandoned the monastery and went to Bangkok to find drugs. The rest of The Libertines, with Rossomando stepping-in once more as replacement guitarist, played gigs to promote the album and fulfil commitments (having already cancelled some gigs once, to do again would have been too expensive). On 17 June, back in England, Doherty was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon. He pleaded not guilty and was sentenced on 1 September to 4 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for 12 months. The Libertines did not let Doherty play with them but promised "When he cleans up his addictions he will be immediately welcomed back into the band".[18] However, Doherty had managed to achieve growing success and fame with his new venture, Babyshambles which further reduced the likelihood of reconciliation.

Meanwhile, The Libertines were still releasing fresh material. The new single "Can't Stand Me Now", which detailed the breakdown of the ailing frontmens' once seemingly cast iron friendship, and illustrated the love/hate relationship between Pete and Carl was released on 9 August, and charted at #2. The song included Doherty asking a question which was on many fans' lips - 'Have we enough to keep it together?'. Their eponymous second album was released in late August and topped the album chart. Their final single, the fitting "What Became of the Likely Lads" reached #9.

The Libertines played their last show in Paris on the 17 December, still without Doherty. Barât chose to then dissolve The Libertines as he no longer wanted the band or the name.

Doherty continues with his own band Babyshambles. They have released an album, Down in Albion, and 3 top 10 singles recorded by Mick Jones. Doherty has been the subject of huge tabloid controversy: he has been arrested repeatedly, dates the supermodel Kate Moss, performed at Live 8 with Elton John and been the subject of countless newspaper headlines.

Barât has formed his own band called Dirty Pretty Things (named after his nightclub) which includes Gary Powell on drums. The line-up is completed by Anthony Rossomando on guitar, and former Cooper Temple Clause bassist Didz Hammond. The band released its debut album, Waterloo to Anywhere on May 8, 2006. The single "Bang Bang You're Dead" preceded it, being released on April 24. They toured extensively in the first half of 2006.

Hassall has gone on to front his own band called Yeti. He met bassist Brendan Kersey, lead guitarist Andy Deian Jung, and guitarist Harmony Williams (who used to share a flat with Barât) through mutual friends. The drummer, Graham Blacow, responded to a classified advertisement. Their debut single "Never Lose Your Sense Of Wonder" was released March 2006 and reached number 36 in the charts.

Doherty and Barât remained out of contact for several months after The Libertines had ended. However, on 18 April 2005, at around 11:30pm, Pete Doherty and Carl Barât reunited at the Boogaloo Bar in Highgate, North London. This was said to be a friendly meeting and was the first time the pair had met since 8 June 2004, just before Doherty went to Thailand. The reunion took place when Barât arrived at the bar at 10pm and was told there was a strong possibility that his former bandmate would also be visiting the pub that evening. Upon learning a reunion was possible, Barât told journalist Anthony Thornton that "it might as well happen now, because it’s going to happen sometime". The pair were said to have seemed nervous at first, but greeted each other with a hug, before talking together on a leather sofa. Barât has also said that The Libertines are only "on ice" and that he is in "intermittent contact" with Doherty.

The next sighted meeting of the pair was on July 18th 2006, at the Dublin Castle pub in Camden, London. They also talked to the Los Angeles band The Tender Box who were playing the venue that night. They said in the NME "Who knows if they will reform? It seemed like there was a lot of chemistry between them." (NME 29 July 06, page 4). Carl said in a later interview that it was "all a bit public for my liking. I was blind drunk that night."

Most recently, the pair were temporarily re-united at the 2007 NME Awards. After being guided over to Pete's table by his entourage, Carl and Pete talked for a while at the table, before going off to the bar. According to the NME, they seemed to be really getting on well, even though they had not met since the Dublin castle meeting of 2006 (NME 10 March 07, page 39).

Doherty and Barât had different influences musically. Doherty was inspired by bands such as The Smiths, Suede and Chas & Dave. Barât admired The Velvet Underground, The Jam, The Doors and Django Reinhardt. Doherty liked the written works of William Blake, Emily Dickinson and Thomas Chatterton, whereas Barât preferred Saki and the Edwardian idea of wit. An idol common to both of them was Oscar Wilde.

The Libertines' lyrics occasionally reference their idea of sailing on "the good ship Albion to Arcadia". This idea was especially important to Doherty who has continued the theme when writing for Babyshambles. He thinks of Arcadia as a utopia without any rules or authority.

Their recordings were fairly lo-fi. Mick Jones' recording method was hands-off: he allowed the band to perform one song several times through and would then choose the best take. He performed minimal mixing and dubbing. Bernard Butler was less strict with this, however the final sound still came across as raw and unpolished.

The band has been compared to many classic British rock bands, as their angle on rock is uniquely English. The resemblance to The Beatles, both in their mop-top apperarance and their wild yet melodic music, is striking. Their sound is often likened to that of The Jam and The Kinks' early records as well as The Clash's first album and early singles. They are perhaps most similar to pioneer rockers, Buzzcocks. Morrissey is another strong influence cited by the band members. Many of their lyrics refer to elements of British life, use English/cockney slang and are sung in a near-drunken sounding slur. In their attitude they are sometimes compared to The Sex Pistols due to their chaotic and energetic live performances.

The Libertines were praised for forming a very close relationship with fans. No band of that profile before them had allowed their fans to get so close to them. The band befriended several of their fans. Their guerilla gigs allowed devoted fans to see them in close proximity. They would allow fans into their own flat to see them play. Doherty published the "Books of Albion" online, sharing his personal thoughts and feelings freely. He also frequently posted on the fan forums. This allowed fans a deep insight into his life and helped cement the relationship between the band and the public. They were also very free with their recordings, releasing songs free onto the internet and via word-of-mouth giveaways. This rewarded fans with the chance to hear unfinished songs or ideas, some of which would grow into finished versions on the albums, some of which would be discarded.

The Libertines have had two biographies written about them. Both were written after the split, by close friends to the band. The first was "Kids in the Riot: High and Low with The Libertines" written by Peter Welsh, a friend. The second was The Libertines Bound Together: The Story of Peter Doherty and Carl Barât and How They Changed British Music written by Anthony Thornton and Roger Sargent, an NME journalist and photographer respectively who had followed the band from an early stage.

It is undoubtable that the Libertines have had a lasting effect on the British music scene. The image of Doherty and Barat entwined, Barat looking up protectively as his friend leans into his shoulder, on the front of their second album, has been called by Anthony Thornton "one of the most iconic rock images of the last decade". Their poetic lyrics have inspired thousands of young people to start writing poetry and songs of their own. The intellectualism of their songs - drawing references to William Blake and Oscar Wilde - was a welcome revival of a new strain of British music pioneered by The Smiths. Many young bands cite them as an influence and in their brief tenure as the kings of British music, they inspired scenes of devotion not seen since Manic Street Preachers. Their refusal to distance themselves from their fans was far from just a marketing gimmick, but something which has inspired the "secret gig" phenomenon which many current rock bands have tagged onto. Their influence on British fashion is undoubtable - the military jacket look of the autumn 2005 was inspired by Hedi Slimane's designs around Pete Doherty while the "skinny tie and black suit" and military jacket and jeans looks have also been taken up by following British bands such as the Metro Riots, Razorlight and The Kooks. These fashions were pioneered by The Libertines, Doherty in particular.

Although both Pete Doherty and Carl Barât both date women and use female pronouns in romantic contexts when they write music, curiosity surrounds the exact nature of their relationship. This is predominantly fueled by heavy amounts of fan speculation which surround their relationship. Notorious for their intense on-stage chemistry, and with frequent, and extremely close-contact microphone sharing (and allegedly, enthusiastic kissing), this ambiguity, whether genuine or staged, earned them a large slash fiction following with female fans of the band. Interestingly, Roger Sargent, close friend and photographer of the band, described their relationship as like "first love, and all the jealousy and obsessiveness that comes with that" - adding "I think there's, y'know, obsession and jealousy on both of their sides. They bitch about each other to each other or to other people. They have a bond, intellectually and spiritually, like nothing I've ever seen ... but sometimes, you know, you just think, god, why don't you just get a room?!" In the same interview, a Radio One documentary, upon being asked just how close their relationship was, Doherty almost confirmed the rumors, responding "I love him. Wouldn't go, um - certainly not on Radio 1 - go into too much detail, but... we had lots of wonderful times together, yeah." But in contradiction, Barât, when questioned similarly, steadfastly denied that the relationship had involved anything "physical." Carl Barat has insisted that "People are really into conjecture" and has frequently denied having a sexual relationship with Pete Doherty.

GSOTD: Soft

By KINGS OF LEON

I used to see you every day
Used to see you every day
I danced around your folk and soul
I danced to all your fucking soul
I left you with your nose a bleedin
And your toes creepin' around
Ahhh so mudane and incomplete
Hand me down my pants and get me off this street

I'm passed out in your garden,
I'm in I can't get off so soft
I'd pop myself in your body,
I'd come into your party but I'm soft

Behind the fringe of a whiskey high
Mutilating cat like eyes,
And in your nose blood decadence
You try to drag me into your bohemian dancing
You paint my fingers and you paint my toes,
You let you perfect nipple show

By KINGS OF LEON

It's your life
Don't you let em tell you when to bat your eyes
You're the only one who's gonna sacrifice
Makes no difference if you're right or wrong
Take that ride
But I want your little sister by your side
Maybe little later we can all collide
Do our livin' like a rollin' stone
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted

[Chorus:]
Innocent smile
Runnin' free
Baby's gonna give it like it used to be

Show your face
Livin' in the shadows like you got no name
Enough to make a little girly go insane
Be my guest to let it out tonight
It's ok
I know all about the little games you play
Shakin' your apple right in my face
Only when you know that I'm beggin' fort a bite
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted

[Repeat Chorus x2]

So won't you show your face (show your face)
Your little apple shake (show your face)
I know the love you gave (show your face)
I know the love you take (show your face)

[Repeat Chorus]
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted time
Time on me is wasted

Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3 at the 40 Watt Wednesday March 21

Last year marked 30 years of making records for avant psych-folk artist Robyn Hitchcock. What does this mean? Nothing, really. Hitchcock celebrated the anniversary by releasing another weird record, but this time with Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin and Scott McCaughey - dubbed The Venus 3 - edging him just a bit closer to the mainstream (while maintaining his familiar college radio hipness). Olé Tarantula opens with a cosmic Ziggy Stardust intro, heralding the weirdness of the rest of the record, which doesn't stray far from Hitchcock's previous efforts.

Hitchcock, no stranger to Athens, is most widely known for patently strange lyrics. Frequently dismissed by first-time listeners, his songs' words are actually steeped in artistic value - at least according to dedicated fans. Hitchcock is frequently portrayed as a new age surrealist, and his art (music, paintings and even acting) creates a distorted image of reality that seems legit, but slightly askew.

Take, for example, Hitchcock's 1998 Jonathan Demme-directed live concert film Storefront Hitchcock . Hitchcock appears to be a well-groomed, well-spoken Englishman on the surface. During his spoken "raps," which occur throughout the performance, Hitchcock casually engages in conversational rants about... well, anything - minotaurs, spleens, electric coffee. Though this prose may seem nonsensical, there's meaning intended.

Similar remarks can be made about Hitchcock's music over the past three decades - it sounds very much like everyday music on the surface, with very strange lyrics overtop. But somehow, there is detectable substance - it just takes a while to find. In this way, Hitchcock could very well be one of the most brilliant and artistically cerebral recording artists of the past 30 years - or he could be a crazy Brit with a passing ability to write songs, strum the guitar and sing with a charming accent. Neither is clear, but this is his legacy: perplexing prolificacy.

JOTD: Who's the Most Fun to Operate On?

Four surgeons were sitting around discussing who they like to operate on.

The first surgeon said, "I like operating on librarians. When you open them up everything is in alphabetical order".

The second surgeon said, "I like operating on accountants. When you open them up everything is in numerical order".

The third surgeon said, "I like operating on electricians. When you open them up everything is color coded.

The fourth surgeon said, "I like operating on politicians."

The other three surgeons looked at each other in disbelief. One of them asked why.

The fourth surgeon replied, "Because they are heartless, gutless, spineless, and their ass and head are interchangeable".

Hitchcock @ the Knitting Factory

Music Review Robyn Hitchcock

Compassion, Indifference and Several Other Things Too

By JON PARELES

Published: March 29, 2007

Robyn Hitchcock's longtime fans cherish his whimsical free-associating banter between songs nearly as much as the catchy, surreal songs themselves. But on Tuesday night at the Knitting Factory, in an unusual burst of straightforwardness, he explained the artistic strategy he has been using since he arrived in 1977 as the leader of the Soft Boys, a neo-psychedelic band in the punk-rock era.

"It's all not so much meaningless as inconsequential, or ultimately painless, if you find the right level to watch things from," he said. "The trick is to have one eye full of compassion, and the other one has about 500 mil of indifference, and you kind of blend it."

That blend wouldn't be complete without a few more balances: close observation and unhinged fantasy, humor and an unsparing recognition of death and deterioration. Add a lifelong fascination with insects, from an old song, "Kingdom of Love," which describes an infatuation as "You've been laying eggs under my skin," to the title song of his most recent album, "Olé! Tarantula" (Yep Roc). Mr. Hitchcock's imagery arrives in music that's a happy throwback to the mid-1960s, when psychedelic bands were packing their ideas into tuneful four-minute songs. At the Knitting Factory Mr. Hitchcock and his band played the early Pink Floyd single "See Emily Play," written by Syd Barrett, a compendium of ideas that would turn up in his own songs.

They also played "Eight Miles High," the Byrds song about a West Coast band visiting London. Lately Mr. Hitchcock's music has made the return trip. He's an Englishman transplanted to Seattle, and his band, the Venus 3, is three members of R.E.M. who also live in the Pacific Northwest: R.E.M.'s founding guitarist, Peter Buck, and two current members, Bill Rieflin on drums and Scott McCaughey on bass. (R.E.M.'s members were early and enthusiastic Soft Boys fans.) While they can rev up to the near garage-rock of the early Soft Boys, they often give Mr. Hitchcock's songs the pealing guitar interplay and country tinge of California rock.

The sound makes Mr. Hitchcock's songs a little more reflective; at 54, he doesn't pretend to have no past. Some of his newer songs, like "N.Y. Doll" - an imagined deathbed letter from the New York Dolls' original bassist, Arthur Kane - are unabashedly tender. But he hasn't changed so much in 30 years; what might be a narrow niche for some songwriters has proved to be endlessly productive for Mr. Hitchcock. His newest songs, and some of his oldest, strike the same quizzical balances: nutty and thoughtful, flinty and sympathetic, and always with a good tune to cling to amid joys or disasters.

Irvine's Hitchcock Review (Annapolis)

Saw the RH show in Annapolis on Sunday. I have to say this is the most enjoyable touring band he's had in years (Soft Boys notwithstanding.) Buck gets all the jangly bits right, and Scott McCaughey and Robyn make a great vocal pair. Scott even chimes in on Robyn's monologues, something I don't recall other band members ever doing.

Great song selection, though Robyn seems overly fond of Briggs these days. There were quite a few requests for "Taco Wagon", which Scott almost obliged. We did get a nice Arnold Lane though. The Rams Head club has really great sound as well.

GSOTD: Holy Roller Novacaine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uswNjWD-uo

By KINGS OF LEON

My darling you look lovely
I've come to lay you down
Uncover your head and submit to me
We'll make a joyful sound
I don't care if you're by yourself
Or you're all alone when you need my help
Keep that smile on your pretty face
Cause you don't have much I can't take away

[Chorus:]
Don't you worry baby
You won't feel a thing
Close your eyes
Holy Roller Novocaine

Lord's gonna get us back [x4]
I know, I know
Lord's gonna get us back [x4]
I know, I know

You'll be hearin' me comin'
But I can't come inside
I'll be out back in my white Cadillac
Won't you join me for a ride
Let me take you up to the mountain top
There I'll show all the goods I got
Don't look back keep your eyes ahead
This could be the night that the moon goes red

[Repeat Chorus]

All the world is moanin'
And baby so am I
I'm just givin' you warning
And I'm telling you why

Lord's gonna get us back [x4]
I know, I know
Lord's gonna get us back [x4]
I know, I know
Lord's gonna get us back [x4]
I know, I know
Lord's gonna get us back [x4]
I know, I know

Tom Jones' Daily Metrosexual Moment

THE GIFT OF MAKING TODAY YOUR MOMENT IN TIME

Whether you're sixteen or sixty, I encourage you to have the courage to find the magic in this day. Go out of your way to appreciate the deserving things here before you: people who matter, places that will inevitably change, and circumstances that get rearranged all too easily.

Do more than stop and smell the roses. Search them out. Plant new ones in the places you pass by! Send bouquets of flowers to the people you care about. Remember that there's more to appreciate in this moment than we realize...

Years from now, the truth of this will shine. And one of your sincere regrets will be not knowing how good you had it...at the time.

Sweeney's Hitchcock Review

A very nice show -- we enjoyed it immensely (but, although leaking my seat location (I was right in front, just below the stomping and swaying Scott McCaughey) and appearance in a previous post, I met no Philly area Fegs (sorry Lauren, Jeanne, Max, et al; prob. my fault - I shoulda given out our cell # or something), but, very strangely, we DID end up sitting (by total coincidence) at the same table as Cynthia from Chicago (!) who stood behind us at the Chicago Metro show in Nov. (!!) and who was in Philly to catch a show with a local friend (small frickin' world, eh?!?)).

Anyway - on to the facts (incl. red/brown ameoba/lizard shirt that I must have seen him wear 4 or 5 times in the past) (ranking just ahead of the black and white polka dot jobby):

Uncorrected Personality Traits (Robyn w/acoustic)
Queen Elvis (add Bill)
Red Locust Frenzy (add Scott)
16 Years ("an imaginary song...so imaginary we don't know how it starts...") (add Peter)
Sally Was a Legend
Ole Tarantula
Afterlight
Balloon Man (Robyn switches to electric near the end for outro solo, IIRC)
Chinese Bones
Jewels For Sophia
The Underneath
The Authority Box
Brenda's Iron Sledge
City of Shame
Madonna of the Wasps
(A Man's Gotta Know His Limitations) Briggs (seen it live since - I think - '97 and this was (by far) the shortest version of the intro I've heard)

Encore:

I Often Dream of Trains (Robyn solo electric)
Kingdom of Love*
Not Dark Yet
Give it to the Soft Boys

Nice show, nice night...onto Lindsey Buckingham in Philly tomorrow night (who - sadly - doesn't vary his set much...but still provides a rockin' good time), then continue on our East Coast vacation.

...But first, tomorrow afternoon, a tour of the city...either by double-decker bus or - wait for it - fuck me, baby: a trolleybus...I know what I'm voting for...

JOTD: Clinton and the Beer Cans

Back when Bill Clinton and Hillary got married Bill told her, "There's one thing I want you to know. There's a box under my bed and I don't want you to look in it until I die."

Hillary agreed to this but, over the years, the curiosity got the better of her and she finally looked in it. She found three beer cans and 1.5 million dollars in cash.

When she asked Bill what the beer cans were for, he replied, "Well, those are for all the times I've cheated on you."

Hillary said, "Well, that's not bad after all these years and you being a politician and traveling and all."

She was about to leave, but then she said, "Hey, Bill, what about the 1.5 million dollars?"

Bill replied, "That's for all the times the box got full and I had to cash the cans in."

GAOTW: Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon are a rock band made up of three brothers and a cousin, based in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Their influences range from Southern rock, indie, to blues styles. Their critically acclaimed first and second albums have given them a devoted ollowing, especially in Europe.

The group's name is derived from Nathan, Caleb, and Jared's father and grandfather, both named Leon. Jared and Caleb were born in Tennessee, while Nathan and Matthew were born in Oklahoma. The brothers spent much of their youth travelling around the American South with their father, a traveling United Pentecostal Church preacher and their mother, who taught them when they were not in school. According to Rolling Stone magazine, "While Leon preached at churches and tent revivals throughout the Deep South, the boys attended services and were occasionally enlisted to bang on some drums. They were home-schooled or enrolled in small parochial schools. Except for a five-year stretch when they settled in Jackson, Tennessee, the Followills spent their childhoods driving through the South in a purple 1988 Oldsmobile, decamping for a week or two wherever Leon was scheduled to preach."

Their father was defrocked and their parents divorced in 1997 and after various jobs, the brothers moved to Nashville in 1998. They formed a band in 2000 with their cousin Matthew. Their music is influenced by their religious upbringing and their Southern roots and also other musicians, including Matthew R. Hudson who played the drums in a similar fashion to that of Nathan.

Before trying their hand at rock and roll, brothers Nathan and Caleb sang country music. They worked for a brief period of time with label/management group Pistol Creek Productions. They spent their time with this label mainly singing at rodeos. They also were members of the West Tennessee Mass Choir for a short time.

Nathan, the oldest of the brothers, graduated from the now defunct private school, Christian Life Academy, in Henderson, TN. Caleb dropped out mid-senior year to pursue country music and is now married to Mel Tonkin.

Upon signing with RCA, they were introduced to Nashville-based song-writer/producer Angelo Petraglia, who had previously worked with artists such as Brooks & Dunn, Trisha Yearwood and Martina McBride. Petraglia would prove very important to the band, moving them in a more rock-oriented direction and co-writing many of their songs. "I turned those guys on to the Rolling Stones and a lot of the older raw rock-and-roll stuff," he said.

The Holy Roller Novocaine EP was Kings of Leon's first release. It contained some of the songs that would later be released onto Youth and Young Manhood. However, it also included the famous B-side "Wicker Chair". All the songs were co-written by Petraglia.

They got their start with their album Youth and Young Manhood and rose to relative stardom, especially outside the United States, by being chosen by popular rock bands The Strokes and U2 to tour with them. All songs were again co-written by Petraglia, who also contributed guitar and co-produced the album with Ethan Johns. The song "Red Morning Light" was used as the opening song for the video game FIFA 2004. "Holy Roller Novocaine" was used in the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and the TV show The Shield.

Their second album Aha Shake Heartbreak was released in the United Kingdom in October 2004 to widespread acclaim. The album was praised for its mix of garage rock and Southern swagger. "The Bucket", "Four Kicks", and "King of the Rodeo" were all released as singles. Aha Shake Heartbreak was released on February 22, 2005 in the United States.

In March 2006, it was announced by NME that Kings Of Leon were back in the studio, working on their third album. Drummer Nathan Followill told NME.COM: "Man, we're sitting on a bunch of songs right now that we wish we could let the world hear!"

"Charmer," "My Party," "Arizona," and "Fans" were all premiered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2, 2006 at Summerfest, which may have also had an unplanned encore that included additional new songs premiered, but the full setlist remains unknown. Other new songs were premiered later in 2006, including "On Call", "McFearless" and "Black Thumbnail." The Kings played another new song called "My Party" at the 2006 Austin City Limits Music Festival.

Kings of Leon's third album is entitled Because of the Times, which is a not-so-subtle reference to a large UPC ministers conference held in Alexandria, Louisiana that the brothers often attended. The album will be released on April 2, 2007 in the UK, and a day later in the US. The album will be preceded by the single "On Call", which will be available for download on iTunes on February 6. The single will be available for airplay on February 26 in the US, and available to purchase in the UK on March 26. The song can currently be heard on their MySpace page. On the 13th of February the album leaked on file sharing sites and is thus available for download as "Advance" copy. The source of the copy is unknown.

The band toured in 2006 with Bob Dylan on his never ending tour. The band is now touring the United Kingdom in February and April 2007. In November 2006 they supported Pearl Jam while that band was in the Australian leg of its tour. They are also confirmed to play Oxegen 07 in Co.Kildare, Ireland in July 07. They will also play Bonnaroo 2007 in Manchester, TN and Rock Werchter 2007 in Belgium. They are also set to play the main stage at T in the Park, Scotland's largest music festival, on Sunday 8th July 2007, as well as the Reading and Leeds Festivals (Reading on Friday 24th, and Leeds Saturday 25th).

I don't care about the state of my hair
I got something out of nothing
That just wasn't there
And your kiss kiss kiss
Is never gonna blow me away
Dreams of escape keep me awake
I'm never gonna get out and make it away
I'm a stone dead tripper
Dying in a fantasy
Like a cracked open sky it helps you to die
Don't split it scrape it
You're screaming automatic pain
Too young kid you're gonna get hit
Looks like your never gonna make it
Off the government list
I don't mind about the state of my mind
But you know it's good for nothing
And I left you behind
It's a sick sick city
But it's never gonna make me insane
If you're talking for real
Then go cut a deal
You're facing up to living out
The way that you feel
And you shake shake shake
'Cause you know you'll never make it away
Well I guess that's why I've always
Got the blues

JOTD: Park Politics

A man is sitting on a bench in the park reading a newspaper. Suddenly he throws the paper onto the ground and yells, "All politicians are Assholes."

A man sitting next to him in a finely pressed suit says, "I take offense to that!"

The pissed-off guy asks him, "Why? Are you a politician?"

"No," he replies, "I'm an Asshole."

Hitchcock Recommends

Elvis Perkins, in today's Guardian report from South by Southwest:

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,,2040020,00.html

Elvis Perkins What is he like? His dad was Psycho actor Anthony Perkins; his mum died in 9/11; his debut album Ash Wednesday was released on XL this February; and he's been touring with My Morning Jacket. Chosen by: Robyn Hitchcock, psych-folk-rock musician "He looks like Another Side of Bob Dylan-era Dylan - the button-down shirt, mouth-harp and the hair going up - crossed with Rolling Thunder-era Dylan 10 years later with the upright bass. But the mood of the music isn't Dylan-y at all; it's quite ramshackle and very direct, passionate but not self-conscious. He didn't appear to take himself too seriously. There's a very interesting story to his life but the music that came out of it wasn't what you'd expect. He's got quite a feisty band, with a bass player who looks like Chuck Norris and a drummer who looks as if he must know how frightening he looks. And what with having two names that come from the Million Dollar Quartet - as in Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins; it's like being called Roy Cash - he is, as we say, so a story. One to watch." Where to hear him: Ash Wednesday is out now on XL. You can hear three tracks at myspace.com/elvisperkins

JOTD: Diver Meets Guy Underwater

One day, a diver was enjoying the aquatic world 20 feet below sea level. He noticed a guy at the same depth he was, with no scuba gear on whatsoever.

The diver went below another 10 feet, but the guy joined him a minute later. The diver went below 15 more feet, and a minute later, the same guy joined him.

This confused the diver, so he took out a waterproof pad and pencil, and rote, "Amazing! How are you able to stay this deep down without equipment?"

The guy took the pencil and pad, erased what the diver had written, and wrote, "I'm drowning, you moron!"

Smashing Pumpkins New Album, Tour

2007-03-20 08:53:54.430

Story by: Amanda Farah

The wait is finally over: Smashing Pumpkins have announced that they will release a new album. A year and a half after Billy Corgan placed a full-page ad in a Chicago newspaper stating he "wanted his band back," it is now official that Zeitgeist, the Pumpkins' first album since 2000, will be released this July via Reprise, coinciding with headlining gigs at the Leeds and Reading Festivals (their only confirmed North American date is at the Virgin Festival in Toronto). The line-up for the Smashing Pumpkins reunion has not yet been finalized; Corgan and drummer James Chamberlain (who worked with Corgan on the short-lived Zwan project) have both been confirmed, but who will fill the role of bassist on this outing has not yet been revealed.

Zeitgeist will be released July 7
-a Saturday, as opposed to a traditional Tuesday release-at 7:07 a.m., thus milking the 07/07/07 date to the fullest (and you thought people went overboard with the 666 release dates last year).

Tour Dates For Smashing Pumpkins

05/31 - Primavera Sound - Barcelon, Spain
06/02 - Rock AM Ring Festival - Nürnberg, Germany

The More You Know

JOTD: Desert Island Rescue

A man was stranded on a desert island for 10 years. One day a beautiful girl swims to shore in a wetsuit....

Man: "Hi! Am I ever happy to see you."

Girl: "Hi! It seems like you've been here a long time. How long has it been since you've had a cigarette?"

Man: "It's been ten years!" With this information the girl unzips a slot on the arm of her wet suit and gives the man a cigarette.

Man: "Oh thank you so much!"

Girl: "So tell me how long its been since you had a drink?"

Man: "It's been ten years" The girl unzips a little longer zipper on her wet suit and comes out with a flask of whiskey and gives the man a drink.

Man: "Oh... thank you so much. You are like a miracle!"

Girl: [Starting to unzip the front of her wet suit.] "So tell me then, how long has it been since you played around?"

Man: "Oh, my God, don't tell me you've got a set of golf clubs in there too?!"

Hitchcock Review by Miles

If you bet that tonight's show would feature John Paul Jones playing mandolin on a cover of Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime," you're a winner. The timeline since 1979 has gotten very, very warped somewhere along the way.

The band:

Robyn Hitchcock - lead vocals, 6-string acoustic
Pete Buck - 12-string electric
David Rawlings - 6-string acoustic, backing vox
Gillian Welch - 6 string acoustic, backing vox, co-lead on *
Sean Nelson - backing vox
John Paul Jones - mandolin

The Robyn attire:
Purple floral shirt, purple trousers

The blinking:
not noticeable at all. I was four rows back, so I had a very good view.

The attendance:
It wasn't a sellout, but it was probably upwards of 80% full. Lots of enthusiasm.

The setlist:
Belltown Ramble
Adventure Rocket Ship
Ole Tarantula
Balloon Man
Flesh #1 (Beatle Dennis)
Tiny Montgomery [Dylan]
Lo and Behold [Dylan] / Life During Wartime [Talking Heads]
Elvis Presley Blues* [Welch/Rawlings]
Queen Elvis
Brenda's Iron Sledge
Flanagan's Song
Copper Kettle [Dylan]
Creeped Out
A Man's Got To Know His Limitations, Briggs
I Wanna Destroy You
======
Look At Miss Ohio* [Welch/Rawlings] (just Robyn, Gil, Dave, but the full band returns for...)
Candyman [Grateful Dead]
Television
Acid Bird (Robyn breaks a string and after the song switches to 12-string acoustic for...)
Queen Jane Approximately [Dylan]

The good:
Enough '80s in the setlist to put a smile on my face, especially when they played "Acid Bird." A good time had by all players. The contrast between the lively GilNDave on the left side of the stage and the immobile Jones/Buck duo on the right side. Robyn completely changing the words of the verses of "Life During Wartime." The Elvis-themed song interlude in mid-set (Elvis was also the preshow music). The lower register of Robyn's voice, whose magnificence really ought to move him to change the arrangements of his older material, much as the former frontman of Mr. Jones' famous former outfit has done with his back catalog. JPJ's picking throughout, but on "Balloon Man" and "Television" especially.

The bad:
Me having a coughing fit during "Flanagan's Song," the only SPOOKED song I really love. Too many SPOOKED songs, though not as many as I
feared. The same instrumentation on every song leading to a strummy saminess no matter how good a time the protagonists were having. Not
meeting this Bill MacLehose character - I must not have looked Henry VIII enough, though I considered wearing a tam, chowing down on a
turkey leg, and beheading a wife while in line.

The Bryan Ferry:
Robyn sang, sotto voice almost off-mic, the words to "More Than This" at the end of "Flesh #1 (Beatle Dennis)." Since we both like Bryan
Ferry, yeah, I always like this kind of thing.

The Buck:
Pete Buck could not have been more catatonic. For a goodly number of years, I saw REM as many times as I could, not to mention seeing Buck
up close on the Magnificent Seven tour, and Mr. Buck was on all these occasions a good deal more lively. It's like the out-of-work guys who
used to replace Politburo members with animatronic substitutes have now perfected the Pete Buck model. This may go a long way toward
explaining the last three REM albums.

The quotes I managed to write down:
* Before "Balloon Man": "The source of everything is country music - and this is no exception."
* Introducing "Flesh #1": "A painkiller song."
* Explaining "Brenda's Iron Sledge": "What life was like in Britain in 1980, until Spandau Ballet came along."
* Dedicating "Briggs": "To the late Karl Rove - here's hoping."
* Dedicating "I Wanna Destroy You" "to the present administration"

The thing I will explain before you ask me:
No, I didn't record it, but I saw people who did, so I suspect it'll show up on the Internets near you somewhere soon.

Do I think I wasted my money? No. I'm glad I went. And now I've seen all three surviving members of Led Zeppelin, which is pretty darn cool.

Would I rather be seeing the Venus 3 show in Birmingham tomorrow night? Darn skippy.

later,

Miles

A U. S. Marine squad was patrolling north of Fallujah when they came upon an Iraqi terrorist, badly injured and unconscious. On the opposite side of the road was an American Marine in a similar but less serious state. The Marine was conscious and alert and as first aid was given to both men, the squad leader asked the injured Marine what had happened.

The Marine reported, "I was heavily armed and moving north along the highway here, and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. We saw each other and both took cover in the ditches along the road."I yelled to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable lowlife."

He yelled back, "Ted Kennedy is a good-for-nothing, fat, left-wing liberal drunk."

So I said, "Osama Bin Laden dresses and acts like a frigid, ugly, mean-spirited lesbian!"

He retaliated by yelling, "Oh yeah? Well, so does Hillary Clinton."

"And, there we were, in the middle of the road, shaking hands, when a truck hit us."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6ogWgG0UOY

By THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN

I can’t explain exactly what I’m doing standing in the rain
Don’t do it for fun
Do it if you feel it
Kiss it on the tongue
I’m taking my thoughts to a railway station
Put ’em on a train just to see what’s coming back
What’s coming back
It’s coming like a heart attack

Ice melts too fast
So nothing stays forever nothing’s gonna last
She’s dressed in black
A black that ends in nowhere and I just got to have her back
And I’m television sick and I’m television crazy
No one works so hard just to make me feel so bad
I’m feeling bad
Oh that’s too sad

Hey. hey. hey. she’s as mean as mean.
Hey. hey. hey. she’s as black as black.
Hey. hey. hey. she’s as mean as mean.
Hey. hey. hey. she’s as black as black.
Hey. hey. hey. I got to get her back.
Hey. hey. hey. I got to get her back.
Hey. hey. hey. I got to get her back.
Hey. hey. hey. she’s as mean as mean.
Hey. hey. hey. she’s as sick as sick.
Hey. hey. hey. she’s as cool as cool.
Hey. hey. hey. she’s as black as black.

JOTD: Devil in the Church

One Sunday morning, everyone in one bright, beautiful, tiny town got up early and went to the local church.

Before the services started, the townspeople were sitting in their pews and talking about their lives, their families, etc. Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church. Everyone started screaming and running for the front entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate.

Soon everyone was evacuated from the church, except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew, not moving... seemingly oblivious to the fact that God's ultimate enemy was in his presence. Now this confused Satan a bit, so he walked up to the man and said, "Don't you know who I am?"

The man replied, "Yep, sure do."

Satan asked, "Aren't you afraid of me?"

"Nope, sure ain't," said the man.

Satan was a little perturbed at this and queried, "Why aren't you afraid of me?"

The man calmly replied, "Been married to your sister for over 48 years."

GSOTD: Never Understand

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xs-42ge-TWY

By THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN

The sun comes up another day begins
And I dont even worry about the state Im in
Head so heavy and Im looking thin
But when the sun goes down I wanna start again

You never understand me
You never understand me
Yeah

Dont turn around until you look at me
Why dont you take a second and tell me what you see
Things I see you only disagree
You never understand thats what I want to be

You never understand me
You never understand me
Yeah

Not wishing to hide but you just cant see me
I tell you the truth but you dont believe me
Thinking of love but I cant hear what youre saying
Tomorrow Im leaving
Cause Im not stayin
Yeah....
(uh huh huh)
